Challenge 2
The Task
First Place – Kim Jansen van Rensburg
Second Place – Giovanni Toldo
For this challenge I attempted to add some interest in the background by placing the car at about 30 degrees to the wall, so that the left headlight would light up the wall, and then positioned the model infront of the right headlight, thus reducing the chance of her casting a shadow on the wall in the image. I drove the car halfway up onto the pavement, to get the light to point higher so the model did not have to crouch too low to get into the light source. I positioned the model so that the hotspot of the light lit up her mouth more than the rest of her face, drawing your attention to her “Kiss of Light”
Equipment: Canon EOS 30D with a Canon 17-85mm @ 85mm
Aperture: f/7.1
Shutter speed: 1/80 second. ISO: 1000
Third Place – Peter Wright
My aim was to re-create a 3 light edgy/urban look I have been playing with but using the headlights instead of strobes.
I parked the car angled into a dark alley out the back of our house so the lights would hit a brick wall BG, stuck the lights on full beam – placed an umbrella over one of the lights as key and then had to run back round the block, through the house and out to the alley (There is a locked gate between them preventing walking straight through) where I set up a diffuser screen in front of the other headlight and set up the tripod and self timer.
I used a 24mm AIS lens at F11 & 1/3 sec at 1600 ISO and then processed using some dodging and burning, high pass and some de-saturation.
